• Far from complete, and definitely in no particular order, here are some of our favorite albums from artists of many genres and time periods. Some may be very known to you, maybe you also listened to a lot of these same bands while growing up, as we did. The crazy excitement of youth and the aching boredom, some of these were a soundtrack to our teenage years. Through the reckless parties, sex, violence, and all the tainted fruits of life. Others carried us into our work with Mourning the Ancient, some of these bands we've even come to know personally or have had the opportunity to interview. Others we might not have liked as much, except for maybe they played during certain times in our lives, they 'grew' on us as they say. I'm sure you have more than a few favorites like this too.

As you may estimate, this is a huge undertaking, so we'll be adding more and more material every update. Hopefully, there will be some gem here that had slipped by you, and through these pages, you discover musical treasure as we have.

    Title: Burzum/Aske

    Label: Misanthropy Records

    Date: 1994/95

Track listing: (favorites marked with an '*')

[1] Feeble Screams From Forests Unknown

[7] My Journey to the Stars
    [8] Dungeons of Darkness
    [9] Stemmen Fra Taarnet
    [10] Dominus Sathanas
[11] A Lost Forgotten Sad Spirit

[Back in 1995 Misanthropy re-released Burzum's first self-titled effort and the EP Aske. Before this the only copies available were the Deathlike Silence release, and Aske, which was equally hard to obtain. The material here was produced from 1990-1992. There is no point in marking my faves, since I like it all so much. This is classic stuff.]

    [5] Han himmelen klarner
    [6] Snu mikrokosmos tegn
    [7] Svarte troner

[Grishnackh could only follow up the monumental first release with something equally, or more so, great. And he did. Det Som Engang Var is a legend unto itself. Once again, there is no point in marking my faves, since I like them all so much.]

[Brazil's own Sarcofago are legendary pioneers of metal. Luckily, I stumbled upon the cassette of this when I was a mere twelve years old. I've loved this ever since.]

[CD back - Funny I've never noticed the vocalist's pants until now, in the middle. They say 'Sexual Maniac'! HA!]

  • Black Widow

    [7] Sacrifice

[Another cassette I stumbled upon when I was very young was one called 'Metal Inferno', a compilation of strange and wonderfully obscure bands, including Black Widow. The track 'Come to the Sabbat' is beyond legend. It is mind boggling that they put this out in 1970.]

[To those who do not know, this is the original The Gathering, fronted by a male doing death metal vocals, with some female backing vocals. The newer The Gathering is fronted by a female and is nothing like the old band. I really like 90% of the songs here. It was an amazing work, filled with incredible atmosphere and feeling.]
