• Far from complete, and definitely in no particular order, here are some of our favorite albums from artists of many genres and time periods. Some may be very known to you, maybe you also listened to a lot of these same bands while growing up, as we did. The crazy excitement of youth and the aching boredom, some of these were a soundtrack to our teenage years. Through the reckless parties, sex, violence, and all the tainted fruits of life. Others carried us into our work with Mourning the Ancient, some of these bands we've even come to know personally or have had the opportunity to interview. Others we might not have liked as much, except for maybe they played during certain times in our lives, they 'grew' on us as they say. I'm sure you have more than a few favorites like this too.

As you may estimate, this is a huge undertaking, so we'll be adding more and more material every update. Hopefully, there will be some gem here that had slipped by you, and through these pages, you discover musical treasure as we have.

  • Havohej

Title: Dethrone the Son of God

    Label: Candlelight Records

    Date: 1993

Track listing: (favorites marked with an '*')

    [1] Spilling Holy Blood*

[9] Behold the Prince of Peace
    [10] Holy Blood Holy Grail
    [11] Fucking of Sacred Assholes
    [12] Nazarene Decomposing

[This is the most over-the-top piece of vulgar anti-Christian music, perhaps ever. The profanities screamed are laughable at times. But despite this, it is a good release, not lacking in its own vile charm. I once drove a bothersome family member out the door by blaring the most offensive track on this CD, which is composed of the singer screaming his hatred of Christianity for one minute 56 seconds, all without music. I should also note, while there are only 12 songs listed, there are actually 15.]

  • Theatre of Tragedy

    Title: Self titled

    [5] ...a Distance there is...*
    [6] Sweet Art Thou
    [7] Mire
    [8] Dying - I Only Feel Apathy
    [9] Monotone

[Of all the death metal bands with female vocals, here was one of the best. This first CD contains my favorite song by the band, '...a Distance there is...', a beautiful track comprised of piano and Liv's (the female vocalist) delicate vocals. ]

    [8] Decadence Within*
    [9] Injected Sufferage
    [10] Malevolent Creation

[One of the death metal kings of the glory days of death metal. It's hard to pick favorites on a CD like this, where nearly every song is a brutal masterpiece. I remember seeing these guys way back when, they played at this little rented hall with Obituary, Cannibal Corpse and Agnostic Front and the hall was literally torn to pieces. The hall had a Country & Western theme, therefore they had half of wagon wheels coming out of the ceiling (!?), just above reach. Well, one determined metal head reached one of them, lifted himself up and with his feet kicked the ceiling tiles. It rained pieces of ceiling on the crowd. The management of the hall didn't like this, and other events at all. They tried to tell people they couldn't dive off the stage anymore, among other useless rules that we did our best to break. I don't like Agnostic Front, but I liked how they invited the whole crowd on the stage with them in defiance. To end this eventful show, we went out to our car to find our car's battery had been stolen! Ah, the glory days of death metal...]

  • Master

Title: On the Seventh Day God Created...Master

    Label: Nuclear Blast

    Date: 1991

Track listing: (favorites marked with an '*')

    [1] What Kind of God*
    [2] Latitudinarian*
    [3] Heathen
    [4] Used
    [5] Demon
    [6] Constant Quarrel
    [7] Judgement of Will
    [8] America the Pitiful
    [9] Whose Left to Decide
    [10] Submerged in Sin

[This was a landmark release for Paul Speckman's Master. John Tardy lends his wholly unique death metal voice on backing vocals on a few songs and Paul Masvidal of Death/Cynic does guitar. This is a superb release, Speckman's voice seethes with anger. This was also one of the first bands we wrote for an interview back in 1995. This CD contains the patriotic classic track 'America the Pitiful', stating the truth about this violent, greedy and blind country.]

    [3] Chainsaw Gutsfuck*
    [4] Witching Hour
    [5] Necrolust
    [6] (Weird) Manheim
    [7] Pure Fucking Armageddon

[Crazy to think this pioneering work debuted in 1987, although most, including myself, wouldn't hear it until Euronymous released it on Deathlike Silence in 1993. I'm unsure why seven tracks are listed, since there are only six.]

[This CD held some great dark ambience. A favorite 'background noise' for me and unlike many other artists of this genre, not boring.]
