A bugle call for an International Confederate Flag day. A british view on that raging U.S. debate.

In Britain black kids wear the Confederate flag on their t-shirts - with pride. Let me give you that again, just to make sure you read it right. Okay...here it is. In Britain black kids wear the Confederate flag on their t-shirts - with pride. They do. I met two of them in my local supermarket during my weekly shop. Both girls, both mid 20s, both graduates, both vivaciously attractive, charming and articulate. I looked at them and lo, there it was, clearly printed on their t-shirts, the stars and bars. Above was the word 'Rebel' (noun - as in 'I am a rebel') and in larger print underneath 'REBEL' ( verb- as in 'I will rebel'). Intrigued, I had to stop and ask them why two bright, articulate British black girls wore this degnerate symbol of terrible white racist oppression as defined by the mainstream. They both smiled, looked at one another, and what follows is the raw dialogue:

Answer: "It's easy, it's also a symbol of rebellion against the tyrants of conforming, crappy system, that gives you only what they want to give you, that tells you only what they want you to know - and you don't dare ask for anything more. Yeah... we all hate them... its patronizing nonsense... all this stuff... and nothin, no future."

Question: "What system? What stuff is this? You have a future, you're both young, and..."

Answer: "I know what you're going to say... right. We're both graduates, I'm in law, got an L.L.B., ... and I got a degree in public administration. There are simply no jobs, no opportunities apart from stocking shelves... nevermind I'm still living at home... and they think by taking a flag down it somehow changes things... when it opposite... it's just more crappy gesture politics from the fucking 'jester' establishment everywhere. It's so much shit. So we wear this just to shove it in their faces. It's true. It was the symbol of the old Southern Confederates, but it's also a symbol of rebellion, of non-conformity, of really saying you've had fucking enough and you're not going to put up with it anymore..."

Question: "What about the killings in Charleston, when..."

Answer: "Sure, what that guy did in Charleston was horrible, disgusting, but he was just as screwed up and deformed by it all like the rest of us. If I met him I'd tell him he's just fucking stupid to go around killing people..."

Question: "It was black people he murdered..."

Answer: "Yeah, I know, and that was disgusting, but just being black doesn't define you..."

Question: "Surely it does, when some white guy comes to murder you, I would have thought that..."

Answer: "No, what defines you, makes you what you are is whether you are part or not part - a rebel yeah - of their system. You either conform, or not conform to it. Those who do are usually brain dead anyway. That guy was badly screwed up but he could have been my brother and I don't want them fucking around with the rebel flag... it doesn't mean what they decide you should think it should mean. Things change."

Question: "So you evolve..."

Answer: "Look it's a rebel flag... are you a rebel? Gotta go now. Think about it, let's change things."

Question: "It's been amazing meeting you. Really nice. Can I use this chat in an article if I want to?"

Answer: "Whatever... just be honest... bye!"

Make of this what you will. It's provoking to most of the mainstream of the U.S. media and establishment thought, but the times are-a-changing. How about an international rebellion day when we all wear Confederate flag lapels with the word 'Rebel' across each of the bars instead of the 13 stars. Afterall it was originally one of our flags [Britain's -ed], but now could mean a whole lot more.
The date... why that's obvious!!
