Otto Lancelle was martyred in the fight against communism by a sniper on July 3, 1941 at the Kraslava Bridgehead in Latvia. He had the honor of being the first German general killed in communist occupied Russia. He was posthumously promoted to Generalleutnant and awarded the Knight's Cross.
