Why were slaves given vacations, as seen below (March 1 - March 11, not bad, this slave got better vacation time than most people in the USA today)? Why were slaves paid, for that matter? Why did they bother giving them extra clothing? Why did they let them write home? Why did slaves have camp newspapers? Why? Why? Why? And why did this slave continue to work for months after the end of the war (July 31, 1945)? I've translated some of it for you:
