Girls in Chains (aka 'Schoolgirls in Chains')

[DVD#188]

  • Rating [unrated]

  • Released by [Code Red]

  • Duration [90 minutes]

  • Presentation [Widescreen]

  • ©1973/2008

[Note: Directed by Don Jones and shot by cinematographer Ron Garcia of 'Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me' fame. The footage is pretty low quality with lots of artifacts present, but not too terrible. This is a strange film with lots of nudity, 70's style.]

    Cat in the Brain

    [LD#190]

  • Rating [Unrated]

  • Released by [Box Office Spectaculars]

  • Duration [93 minutes]

  • Presentation [Widescreen]

  • ©1990

[Note: Directed by Lucio Fulci. It proudly proclaims the fact that it was banned in Britain in February of 1999, which seems strange that they were still banning gory horror films at such a late date, I mean, aren't we all pretty de-sensitized to this type of thing by now?! This laserdisc was produced in 1999, which makes it a pretty late release for this format, being as the last laser discs in North America were released in 2000 (Sleepy Hollow and Bringing Out the Dead), and 2001 in Japan. Not only does Fulci star in Cat in the Brain, but it was also one of his final films. In 2009 Cat in the Brain was finally released on DVD, but the laser disc seen here came with a poster! You lose DVD!]

    The Walerian Borowczyk Collection:
    Immoral Women/Private Collections/Art of Love

    [DVD#191]

  • Rating [Unrated]

  • Released by [Severin]

  • Duration [115/103/97 minutes]

  • Presentation [Widescreen]

  • ©1979/1979/1983

[Note: The films of Walerian Borowczyk are certainly as strange as they come. Perhaps not as controversial as they were back when they were released, these films still deal with many taboo topics. The first film 'Immoral Women' (or... 'Immoral Director' might be better, or how about 'Immoral Audience'? hehe...) deals with a girl masterbating with the aid of her pet rabbit! In this heart-warming nature tale, the girl's parents hate her and the lusty rabbit, so they decide to cook the pet up and feed it to her without her knowledge. She takes bloody vengeance, of course. Don't come between a girl and her rabbit! This is one of three short films that make up 'Immoral Women'.

The second DVD of this film set 'Private Collections' contains three short films by three different directors. The first film is by director 'Just Jaeckin' (the director of the infamous Emmanuelle film) and is about a guy who is marooned on an island only to find it inhabited by 'hot' native women. Of course, the women are only fattening him up to eat him.

The second film, and my favorite of the whole collection, is a film by Shuji Terayama. The look and feel of this film is superb and strange. There is a part of the film where a boy is seduced by a spirit... the music that plays is dark and truly masterful. Bizarre vocals and even a heavy electric guitar make me wish I had the soundtrack to this. Truly cool stuff.
Walerian ends this disc with a short film that was my least favorite.

Lastly, the third DVD, 'Art of Love' takes place in ancient Rome. Walerian did a great job with his limited budget here, even sneaking cameras into ancient ruins to film them, posing as tourists! Not a bad film, but strange and fairly comical at times like his others. But of all the material gathered here in the Walerian Borowczyk Collection, the irony is my favorite is by a director other than him. Shuji Terayama wins by a landslide!]

  • Released by [Elite Entertainment/Anchor Bay]

  • Duration [95 minutes]

  • Presentation [Widescreen]

  • ©1968/1996

[Note: Directed by Terence Fisher and starring Christopher Lee. The villain in this movie is 'based on Aleister Crowley'...This is considered to be the last great Hammer film. It was previously released in America as 'The Devil's Bride.' The reason given? So the public wouldn't think it was a western! Ah, that discerning American public...]

[Note: This is the limited edition (100,000 copies), two disc version. It contains the directors cut and the theatrical version, plus various featurettes. Directed by Michael Mann. The debut of Hannibal Lecter. Many people believe this film to be superior to Silence of the Lambs, which was also an adaption of the same writer's (Thomas Harris) book. Personally, I like this better as well.]

  • Rating [R]

  • Released by [Anchor Bay Entertainment]

  • Duration [84 minutes]

  • Presentation [Widescreen]

[Note: Directed by Paul Solet. This had a freaky premise, and could have been cool, but somewhere along the line it went awry. Still fairly disturbing and better than most horror movies these days.]
